There are many things you can do to enjoy yourself in the high regions of the Himalaya. I found that each year I add (or subtract) certain things that help with this acclimatization process. I have listed some things that are helpful with my treks:
1) Diamox is recommended by the doctors in that region who run the clinics at Pheriche or Machherno. Taking it can help prevent AMS. The doses they recommend are 250 mg in the morning and 250 mg at night. The side effects are minimal but the benefits can help immensely.
2) Drinking at least three liters of water, soup, tea, etc per day.
3) Taking your own soup (I take packets of miso, tomato and chicken) to add to your water bottle every day helps to get one more liter of liquid in you. I only do this once a day due to the sodium content in the packets of soup. However, when you order soup in the lodges that is great but having a whole liter of soup before dinner can guarantee you are getting the amount of liquid you need per day in high altitude. I bring a big liter cup to use for my soup and my water bottle sits in it in my pack when I trek.
4) Bring little packets of special things you enjoy. I bring little packages of ketchup (for the many potatoes you eat), cracked pepper (for my eggs in the morning), relish and mustard packages and other seasons or spices that perk up a meal.
5) I bring my Uggs instead of tennis shoes. I wear my hiking boots to trek in and my Uggs to hang around the lodges or villages in. They are warm with fleexe inside them and have a sole on them that work for the indoors or the outdoors.
During the consultation I will share more of these tips so you can decide for yourself if you want to try some of the things I do that make my trip a little more enjoyable.
